Past, present, future: Surveillance tools for a changing epidemiological context

This session will consider the methods of surveillance to identify where HIV transmission occurs and hot spots. The session will also explore integrated surveillance for other potential pandemics for early detection and appropriate and timely response, with lessons learnt from COVID-19 and mpox. In the context of declining HIV incidence in central, eastern, southern and western Africa and local transmission of HIV in other regions of the world, methods are needed to detect and follow up on rare events. Examples of methods are detailed hot spot mapping, testing for recent acquisitions, phylogenetic analysis, risk factor studies, cluster analysis and partner notification.
