Viral hepatitis: Not gone, not forgotten

Dr Polin Chan is the Regional Advisor Hepatitis/HIV/STIs in the WHO South-East Asia Regional Office, based in Delhi, India. Polin is a medical doctor, public health and epidemiologist, with over 27 years of experience. She has worked in conflict settings in Africa before starting with the World Health Organisation, serving in countries (India and China) and regions (South-East Asia Regional Office in New Delhi and Western Pacific Regional Office in Manila). From architecting establishment of national HIV programmes to working on triple elimination of mother to child transmission, and in scaling up viral hepatitis programmes and other communicable diseases in countries and region, she has broad-base experience in policy, programming and operations. She has published extensively on the public health response for HIV and viral hepatitis, implementation science and in translating policy and research into operations. Dr Chan’s interests include the systems approach for public policy, disease surveillance and strategic information for decision-making, and nurturing collaboration across sectors to improve Health for All.

Akaki Abutidze graduated from Tbilisi State Medical University in 2005 with MD degree. In 2010 he was awarded a U.S. National Institutes of Health Fogarty International Center scholarship and completed a two year Master of Public Health degree program at the Emory University, Atlanta, USA. Dr. Abutidze received his PhD degree in Infectious Diseases at Tbilisi State University in 2016.

Currently Dr. Abutidze holds the position of deputy director for research at the Infectious Diseases, AIDS and Clinical Immunology Research Center in Tbilisi, Georgia, which is country’s leading institution in the field of HIV, viral hepatitis and other infectious diseases. He has been actively involved in the development and implementation of Georgia’s national hepatitis C elimination program and serves as member of national scientific committee of this initiative.

Dr. Abutidze has over 20 years of experience in HIV, HCV and HBV research leading national cohort studies within several international collaborations. He has published extensively in peer-reviewed literature.
