Nothing about us without us: Strengthening the HIV response through community-led monitoring

Fellow of British Broadcasters in Sustainable Development Communication and a health advocate with a master's in development Communication, covering over 30 years’ experience in development journalism and broadcasting across the globe.

Currently serving as Executive Director of the Network of Journalists Living with HIV (JONEHA), which he founded in 2013. The vision of JONEHA is to be an effective media advocate for quality health services, while its mission is to ensure access to quality health care services for all. JONEHA accomplishes this by mobilizing and empowering journalists and their audiences to engage duty bearers based on evidence generated through data collection, analysis, and advocacy. JONEHA utilizes Community-led monitoring and media products as tools for identifying issues affecting quality health service delivery, thereby facilitating advocacy.

As an accomplished development journalist, health advocate, and pioneer of many initiatives affecting the lives of marginalized communities, including the establishment of the first Development Broadcasting Unit in Malawi using the development through radio approach. He also initiated media use (Radio Listening Clubs) in empowering people with disabilities in Uganda. David is among the pioneers of the current Community Led Monitoring practice in Malawi. In 2010, he introduced the first Stigma Index in Malawi, a study for and by people living with HIV. He has co-authored and published.

Presently, I am Director at CAREMAT Foundation, overseeing organizational activities and CLM in Chiang Mai. I've been dedicated to HIV work and focusing on community empowerment.

Mr. Philbert Liberatus Mutongore is the technical lead for the Tanzanian Key and Vulnerable (KVP) Populations Forum. He coordinates data collection and analysis for community-led monitoring and serves as Coordinator for National Violence Prevention and Response.
